Polycrisis Exploration Workshop Report: European Food Security and Crisis Mechanism

This workshop report summarises a European Commission Joint Research Centre exercise exploring how interconnected crises could affect European Union food security by 2035. Participants identified risks including infrastructure failure, cybercrime, geopolitical fragmentation, climate change, and resource dependencies that could interact to drive food price increases, production declines, supply chain disruptions, import dependence, inequality, and misinformation. The report identifies potential interventions ranging from resilient infrastructure, stockpiling and real-time supply monitoring to financial support, climate-resilient agriculture, stronger coordination, social protection, and measures addressing misinformation, emphasising the need for anticipatory and cross-sectoral approaches to strengthen European food security and preparedness for interconnected crises.
