How Should the World Confront Climate Derailment Risks?

In this panel discussion, held at Chatham House, panellists James Dyke (University of Exeter), Emma Howard Boyd (London Climate Resilience Review), Thomas Homer-Dixon (Cascade Institute), and Kate Mackenzie (The Polycrisis) explored how escalating climate impacts could either reinforce climate action through virtuous feedback loops or derail it through vicious ones, particularly as the world continues to overshoot the 1.5°C goal. They discussed how climate consequences are already interacting with political, financial, and social systems in ways that can undermine the capacity to respond, and concluded that navigating this period requires improved situational awareness, resilience, adaptive capacity, compelling narratives, and leadership capable of holding communities together as the world moves from anticipating climate impacts to living within them.
